Observation and thought

As a school, we have been holding the well-being of our children foremost in our thoughts during the lockdown. Our teachers have been engaging the children with tasks that could help them express, reflect and give voice to their feelings.

Grade 8 Class teacher, Anjana, shares her experience.

To see, think and wonder - in other words to observe and describe, to reason, to question and investigate. These were a few of the objectives in my mind, when I sent out this task to the children. An image was shared with them, along with the following instructions. I am fascinated by the way in which the children have explored multiple viewpoints, compared the task to the current times and made valid connections. They have asked powerful questions, which are definitely worth pondering over.

Look at the image for 1 minute. Scan it from right to left and from left to right. Bottom to top and from top to bottom. In short, look at it very closely.

What do you think is going on in this image? What do you see that makes you say that?

Take a break for a minute. Now look again. What else do you think is going on in this image? What do you see that makes you say that?

How might this picture connect to our current time?
