Soul Notes

‘We are made of music, we are made of time.’

Singing is an integral part of life at Yellow Train. Our days begin with music, on some days music finds a way into classrooms and every gathering, every celebration begins with song.

This year the children of the upper school took things one step further. They brought along their guitars, clapboxes and keyboards to keep the singing company during our weekly assemblies. Week after week, the music grew, filling the bothmer room, until Sindhu, the music teacher decided that the bothmer room was too small to contain the joy the music was bringing.

This is how Soul Notes, our school band, was born. And on the 25th of November, they had their first public event - a fundraiser concert to buy instruments and build their own music room.

On the days leading up to the concert, one could hear a medley of Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and English songs as one walked through the school corridors. Songs about friendship, change, a borderless world, songs about letting go and choosing joy. The evening closed with the audience singing along with the band. There were no performers, no audience - just a gathering of singing voices.

What happens when we foster artistic expression; when we give the children the joy of working towards what they want?

This snippet may not do justice to the air that Soul Notes fashioned out of their melody that evening, but it may give you a glimpse of the many possibilities that evening created.
