Pin Up Board: Coimbatore - love or hate?

A pin up board rested on the landing of the second floor in the beginning of the second term with articles by students and teachers alike. The Comment Section was an experiment to start our in -house magazine that anyone could contribute to. Students worked in pairs to arrive at a theme. The idea behind this was to generate discussion on things that feel immediate and real to us. For this month, the theme is our home town – Coimbatore: Love or Hate?

For those of you who live in Coimbatore, this question might hit a little too close to home. For those of you who haven’t heard of Coimbatore – well that answers the question, doesn’t it?

For those on the inside, the city can often feel like a place where time neither runs or stops but casually skips to a rhythmless lull. For those on the outside, this might seem like a haven, for wouldn't we all want time to skip every now and then?

This is what Shruthi and Zarin had to say on why they chose this theme: Coimbatore as a city doesn’t offer much when compared to what the larger cities in the country have to offer. Is this a boon or a bane? Both of them spoke about how living in a city like Coimbatore prepares them for the world, for when they leave the city, they feel they will truly embrace every opportunity that comes their way. For now, Coimbatore has given them firm roots, taught them the value of family and the pros and cons of living in a city where the feeling, ‘It’s a small world after all’ is constantly emphasised.

Since this is an in - house magazine, the writings and comments that came up won’t be posted on the blog.

But the question that these girls have asked is one worth pondering about – what are the places that shape us and what are the places that we choose to shape?
