Fences

As a part of our The Boy in Striped Pyjamas work in Grade 7, we welcomed the children into the class one day, with a rope fence dividing the class into two. They were not allowed to cross over and meet their friends within the class. Initially there was so much excitement and slowly the physical boundary and the image it brought along with it set in. They left beautiful notes on the fences asking for all fences in the world to be broken down. Identifying the arbitrary boundaries we create as humans and naming it as racism, sexism, social stigma etc., it was true learning.
